No... I don't think I'm going to destroy what we've been after this whole time. Does that sound like a good plan to you? Allow me to introduce myself properly this time... My name is Xochtal Reklaw. Indeed, I am a former stargazer priest... because thanks to my hard work and dedication, I was promoted to a Stargazer Prophet!
~ Xochtal revealing his true nature to the crew.
For your entire lives, you've led your lives in denial and treason! You believe you can defy the will of the stargazers, the followers of Kluex. But your days of delusion are over! You may pray that Kluex is more merciful then I am, because before you meet him, I will punish you all for your sins.
~ Xochtal before destroying a grounded avian village.

Xochtal Reklaw is one of the three main antagonists (alongside Mika Aikawa and King Stormlance) of Crystallic’s Starbound Trilogy. He serves as an unseen overarching antagonist in Starbound: The Black Nebula, the main antagonist of Starbound: Rise of the Stargazers and a posthumous antagonist in Starbound: The Glitch Empire. He is Robin’s grandfather who she had never met until recently. While he pretends to be an Ex-Stargazer Priest that feels remorse for his actions and wants to help the Black Nebula stop the Stargazers from getting the Ancient Kluex Staff, it’s later revealed that he never left the stargazers, and is also revealed to be a Stargazer Prophet who wants to eradicate all grounded avians to “please Kluex”.

Personality[]

At first, Xochtal seems like a kind old man. He claims to have remorse for his actions as a stargazer, and shows support towards Robin and the others. He seems to be patient and wise, giving advice and trying to help people with their problems. However, this is all a facade to who he really is. In reality, Xochtal is very selfish and manipulative, who was only pretending to care and have remorse. However, even when showing his true colours, he remains calm and serious most of time, rarely raising his voice unless it is for a command, or in his final moments where he was panicking about him not finishing his goal.

Xochtal is also delusional, always believing that he is in the right because of his “faith” towards Kluex (which is more of a self serving faith, as he only serves him to get large wings in the afterlife) and using it to justify his actions, and also thinking that everyone else who is claiming that he’s delusional are actually “delusional villains” themselves. While it is implied he has intrusive thoughts, he brushes them off entirely, not feeling a shred of guilt for anything he done. He was even fine with killing his own son.

He is a pretty cruel individual, showing a slightly sadistic side in some of his actions. He intended to wipe out all grounded avians, and would do anything to get to it. Once he wants something, he will make sure he gets it, no matter how cruel he has to be. He was very harsh towards his son, only seeing him as an extension of himself or someone to use. He brushed off the death of his wife due to childbirth, who he only married to have a child with, claiming she’d served her purpose. Overall, Xochtal is a heartless, delusional and selfish person.

Villainous Acts[]

  • Over his time with the stargazers, he has brutally sacrificed thousands of avians.
  • He used his status to enforce a marriage just to have offspring, and when his wife died giving birth, he didn’t care.
  • He was very strict and harsh towards his child, showing no care for him and only seeing him as an extension of himself. After his sons death, he called him a “pathetic failure of a son”.
  • When he had a dream of Kluex being angry and telling him to sacrifice offspring, he attempted to have Robin sacrificed when she was only 3. However, his son and daughter in law intervened, and offered to be sacrificed instead, and Xochtal agreed, sacrificing his son and daughter in law with no remorse whatsoever. (MORAL EVENT HORIZON)
  • He obtained lots of stardust from novakids in the most brutal way by attaching them to machines that would painfully extract all their stardust inside them until they were reduced to lifeless husks. (MORAL EVENT HORIZON)
  • He ordered Ezalco to attack an avian village on Solunar Nexus IV, and went there himself to hide in the background, but intentionally . When Robin found him, he pretended to be remorseful for his actions and eventually, Robin let him in the ship. Xochtal then spend the next few days pretending to be a supportive ally, and also pretending to want to help stop Ezalco, who he was pinning as the big bad. He was also helping find information on the temple where the Ancient Kluex Staff, and also getting the crew to help so he could obtain it himself.
  • Once he got to the Ancient Kluex Staff, he revealed his true colours, and tried to kill the entire Black Nebula crew. He eventually crashed their ship, and badly injuring everyone onboard.
  • He used his staff to destroy countless grounded avian villages, having killed millions of them. He also fully intended to wipe out every grounded avian in the universe. (MORAL EVENT HORIZON)
  • During the climax, he psychologically tortured Ethyl, Robin and Lexie by forcing them to hallucinate their past trauma, fears and insecurities. (MORAL EVENT HORIZON)
  • He tried to directly kill Robin with a bolt of lighting, but Lexie jumped in the way, badly injuring Lexie.
  • Once his staff was being destroyed by Ethyl and he was dying, he tried to kill the crew out of sheer spite.

Quotes[]

Frankly... I can't. You don't have to... It's a long story I could explain in depth if you wish, but in short, I joined the stargazers at a young age. I was scared and terrified. I thought I was doing the right thing, I thought I was helping avians "repent" and join us, so Kluex would give them wings in the afterlife! But... I realised how misguided we were. It's not the right thing to sacrifice others, that just makes people hate us and scared of us. I recently quit the stargazers, and they've been after me since! They want me dead... Ezalco, that crazy old priest, he's so petty and chases after everyone! I came here as I thought it would be safe, I heard about a crew that stopped the star system from being blown up by Mika Aikawa! If you want to, you can leave me here, I deserve it after everything I've done, those horrendous sacrifices...
~ Xochtal to Robin when they first met, faking remorse for his actions.
So, about Ezalco... He's after a very powerful artefact. (Ethyl: Do elaborate.) He is after something called the "Ancient Kluex Staff". I've seen regular Kluex staffs around before, albeit their not common. But the first one made was said to be wielded by the earliest stargazer prodigy. It possesses great power, and the wielder can become very powerful with it, apparently harnessing it's power from Kluex's strength. He wants to use it, but I'm not sure what he wants…
~ Xochtal pretending to warn everyone about Ezalco.
Her confidence and sass... It reminded me of... *sighs* my older sister... (Lexie: Y-You have a sister?) Had, yes... We were close, but we were part of a grounded avian family. She always protected us when the stargazers would arrive, she was confident and knew what she was doing! But one day, they got her. We were all forced to watch my sister, a 14 year old girl... brutally sacrificed. The stargazers terrified me. I... didn't want to suffer like she did. So I went to join the stargazers, to serve Kluex and well, I ended up being a priest... I'm ashamed of how many sacrifices I have taken part in, how many lives I've ended... I'm old now, only to be wrapped in what I've done.
~ Xochtal about his past before the stargazers, and once again, faking remorse about joining them.
Keep her safe, she's my only family I have left... I don't want her being reckless and getting herself killed like my sister did. She's all us Reklaw's have left, and I will not allow her to be killed recklessly when she doesn't need to be. She needs to stop trying so hard, she is giving into her self doubt, which is never a good idea... Simply put, she should brush them all off, and continue living normally. She does not need to try hard over non existent problems. Perhaps she could take a break?
~ Xochtal to Ethyl and Lexie, faking concern about Robin.
You've been pushing yourself too much to try to "be the best". With the fight against Moonquill and the glitch planet... I know you have feelings of wanting to go to the top, but your pushing yourself too far.
~ Xochtal to Robin, encouraging her to calm down.
Believe me Katsu, I shall do the right thing...
~ Xochtal to Katsu before taking the Ancient Kluex Staff.
(Robin: G-Grandfather...? You still need to destroy the staff...) No...
~ Xochtal revealing his true colours to everyone.
When my sister was sacrificed, I begged for mercy like a filthy coward. I was traumatised and horrified at the sight of my sister being killed! The stargazers were merciful enough to accept me. They taught me the right way to do things, how to devote yourself. I realised how wrong everyone else was. Especially my sister, who was actually a terrible person.
~ Xochtal’s true feelings about his sister, and what really happened.
Soon enough, I soared through the ranks through my sheer dedication. I was a priest within 15 years! But I didn't want to end it there. Oh no! If something happened to me, I'd need a bloodline... I used my status to pick a wife who would be useful. She was loyal, kind and did whatever I said. We eventually had a child, but she died giving birth. But she did what she was meant to, so no need to cry over spilled milk!
~ Xochtal on how he became more powerful, and dismissing the death of his wife as a minor inconvenience.
My child became a powerful stargazer through strict training and discipline. I taught him the ways of devoting yourself to Kluex... He grew up so much, and even got married to someone! I was hoping he'd teach you discipline, but he was soft on you... But then something had to be done. I had a vision. Kluex was angry... So we had to sacrifice an offspring. (Robin: Wait... YOU- YOU WERE THE ONE WHO TRIED TO HAVE ME KILLED AS A CHILD?!) Don't sound so upset, it was for a greater purpose, I couldn't be punished in the afterlife after all my hard work, could I? We were so close, but my pathetic failure of a son and his wife decided they'd be sacrificed instead to fill my vision, as it was my offspring... Very well. Two sacrifices are better then one, right?
~ Xochtal about his son, and how he was going to sacrifice Robin.
It isn't cruel... It's duty. Emotional connections are simply holding you back in life. They held me back in the past, so no more. I had to pretend to have them to fit in with you sinners. I knew I couldn't stop you by ordering attacks, you were too good and even stopped mass mundicide. So I knew the only way to get in was to take advantage of your weakness... connections. I pretended I was a pathetic and broken man who was remorseful, I ordered Ezalco to attack Solunar Nexus, but made sure he held back his resources. I don't feel bad for doing the right thing.
~ Xochtal on his disregard for connections, and how he exploited others.
A lot of the villains you've seen... they believe their in the right, don't they? It's the same with you. You all think your heroes, but your nothing more then disloyal scum who deserve to burn and suffer in the afterlife. So I had to pretend I hated being a stargazer, so I would fit in with your lies. I said so much stuff I didn't mean...
~ Xochtal’s delusions, thinking that everyone else is delusional.
Don't be naive, Ezalco. I make my own methods... Novakids are walking, breathing piles of stardust! Their easy sources of it, and once captured, I can absorb their stardust... It's the equivalent of sucking out someone's insides. Except this time, inside novakids lie... a beautiful reward.
~ Xochtal while brutally sucking out the stardust from novakids.
But it's worth it, is it not? If it comes to it, I sacrifice myself to end the grounded avians for good. I'd finally be able to rest, knowing I've done nothing but good in my life. I have no reason to fear death if nothing but praise awaits. Kluex would not only see my sacrifice as noble, but all my other deeds too? I'd prosper up there.
~ Xochtal on how he’d be willing to die to accomplish his goals.
Attention, grounded avians! For your entire lives, you've led your lives in denial and treason! You believe you can defy the will of the stargazers, the followers of Kluex. But your days of delusion are over! You may pray that Kluex is more merciful then I am, because before you meet him, I will punish you all for your sins.
~ Xochtal before destroying a grounded village.
Predictable love... what a weakness. You should also realise that I've made unbreakable orders. I've sent out fleets across the universe to destroy grounded all avians, and not stop until every last one is dead. The Rise of the Stargazers is here, it's coming and you can't stop it! But they can't do it alone, I'll lead the crusades with more power then you can imagine, just watch me do it...
~ Xochtal after nearly killing Lexie, and taunting everyone about how the “Rise of the Stargazers” has begun.
GRGGHHHHH- I'LL KILL YOU ALL!!! *tries to send an attack out, but the staff keeps smoking more and blowing up, and electrocutes him* GZZZGRGGGH!!! NO!!!! THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!!! I'M NOT DONE, MY JOB IS NOT DONE!!! GAGGGGHHHHH!!! *starts smoking and burning himself* I... MUST KILL THEM!!! (Ethyl: I thought ya' didn't fear death. Looks like that was a bluff.) I CAAAA*glitches*N'T DIE BEFORE THEIR ALL DEAD!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO- *starts screaming, as the smoke and fire starts engulfing him*
~ Xochtal’s final words before his death.
